Prestige Figures The Moor
The Moor is a magnificent portrait that's full of mood, dignity, and detail. You can sense the pride in those glaring eyes and folded arms, and admire the smooth lines of his impressive hooded Arab robes, with their sweeping curves and subtle blended hues. This is a top quality small size Prestige Figure in Royal Doulton bone china, originally modelled as a larger piece in 1952 by Charles Noke.
Working on a famous piece like The Moor takes special attention to detail. Prestige Ceramic Artist Dan Smith explained, "Many of the (Prestige) figures take several days to paint and so, usually, I'm continuing work on a specific model...If I were painting The Moor, I'd made sure I'd painted the eyes during the afternoon so that these would be dry for the next morning - when I'd blend in the flesh tones."
He added that The Moor was his best-loved figure to paint, "The Moor is my favourite because I can add so much character to every one I do, so that every one is truly unique. This applies as much to the miniature as to the full size version. The colours often run in the firing process and this adds to the individuality of each piece."
The Moor was first modelled by art director and talented modeller Charles Noke in 1913, and it has been followed up with the issue of several colourways. The figure was originally called 'An Arab' but the name was changed in 1929. The Moor has been in production in variants of this archetypal form since 1952.
It is a favourite of Royal Doulton's Archive Assistant Les Smith who said, "I was a figure painter for 30 years. I was fortunate in being trained by two very talented ceramic artists - Howard Wedgwood, who taught me figure painting, and Fred Clark, who taught me animal painting.
"I enjoyed working on the large animal studies but my favourite piece is The Moor. This is because Howard and Fred were 'old school' teachers and did not believe in praising young painters or their work. One, day, however, Howard complimented me on The Moor and I have liked painting it ever since."
