The classic tale of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was published in November 1865, which means that in 2015 we are celebrating the 150th anniversary of one of the best-loved children's stories of all time. The adventures were created by the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson to entertain the three young Liddell sisters, who were so enchanted by his stories that they urged him to write them down. They were subsequently published under his pen name of Lewis Carroll and have delighted generations of children since.

Although Carroll himself drew the original illustrations of Alice and the people and creatures that she meets in Wonderland, for publication the artist John Tenniel was asked to create new images, and the delightful drawings that he produced have become as famous as the book itself. Tenniel subsequently also illustrated the sequel, Through the Looking Glass, in which Alice has further memorable adventures.

Alice and the many strange and wonderful characters that she encounters on her adventures have inspired many artists and film-makers over the years, but here at Bronte Porcelain we realised how perfectly suited they would be to a collection of limited edition candle extinguishers. In creating our original ‘Alice Five' collection, Bronte's designer Frances Wilson took inspiration not only from Tenniel's famous illustrations and from the tradition of decorative candle snuffers, but was also influenced by Japanese netsuke, the beautiful miniature sculptures that were once part of traditional Japanese costume but which have evolved into an art form in their own right.

Presenting many of the most memorable characters from Alice's adventures, from the White Rabbit and Mad Hatter to the Red Queen and Queen of Hearts , these delightful candle extinguishers are all limited editions. The original ‘Alice Five' collection is limited to just 150 pieces, while the others are editions of either 1,250 or 2,500.
